Notes and Introduction by Mark G. Spencer, Brock University, Ontario John Locke (1632-1704) was perhaps the most influential English writer of his time. His Essay concerning Human Understanding (1690) and Two Treatises of Government (1690) weighed heavily on the history of ideas in the eighteenth century, and Lockes works are often ? rightly ? presented as foundations of the Age of Enlightenment. Both the Essay and the Second Treatise (by far the more influential of the Two Treatises) were widely read by Lockes contemporaries and near contemporaries. His eighteenth-century readers included philosophers, historians and political theorists, but also community and political leaders, engaged laypersons, and others eager to participate in the expanding print culture of the era. His epistemological message that the mind at birth was a blank slate, waiting to be filled, complemented his political message that human beings were free and equal and had the right to create and direct the governments under which they lived. Today, Locke continues to be an accessible author. He provides food for thought to university professors and their students, but has no less to offer the general reader who is eager to enjoy the classics of world literature.
Nourmand, who owns London`s Reel Poster Gallery, and Marsh, a designer and art director, have compiled a lovely array of posters from movies of the 1930s. Among the book`s treasures are full-page reproductions of the poster for the French Wizard of Oz, with a gallant Dorothy strutting toward the Emerald City with her cartoonish sidekicks behind her; the Marx Brothers Duck Soup, done in an abstract wash of color, with Groucho`s signature cigar clearly visible; and It Happened One Night, which shows Clark Gable gazing longingly at the stunning Claudette Colbert. An introductory essay serves as the book`s only text; after that, Nourmand and Marsh organize the posters loosely by genre: romance, adventure, comedy, war. Although the book lacks a table of contents, a rear index lists the 110 films alphabetically.

This pictorial tribute to one of the world`s most beautiful and romantic cities offers a unique introduction to the City of Light. Award-winning photographer Horst Hamann used a panoramic camera to painstakingly set up shot after shot, often finding himself precariously balanced off Notre Dame`s gargoyles, the balconies of the Pompidou Center-even the Eiffel Tower. His efforts have produced an astonishing array of images, stark black and white compositions that lend these photographs a dramatic, often dreamlike quality, and offer unique, vertical reinterpretations of some of Europe`s most recognizable cityscapes.

De Profundis is Oscar Wilde`s eloquent and bitter reproach from prison to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas (`Basic`). In an extended letter Wilde accuses Lord Alfred of selfishness, shallowness, parasitism, greed, extravagance, tantrums, pettiness and neglect. He contrasts this behaviour towards him with the selfless devotion of his close friend, Robert Ross (`Robbie`) who became Wilde`s literary executor, gave the work its title (from the opening of Psalm 130) and who published a shortened version of it in 1905. The Ballad of Rending Gaol is a deeply moving and characteristically generous poem on the horrors of prison life. It was published anonymously in 1898, signed only `C..3..3, Wilde`s cell number in Reading Gaol. Wilde himself, released from his two-year prison sentence in 1897, was at the time living in France on the charity of friends and under the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth. This collection also includes the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism, Wilde`s most outspoken defence of anarchy, and two of his Platonic dialogues, The Decay of Lying and The Critic as Artist in which he puts forward his provocatively witty ideas about art and the social role of the artist. From The 400 Blows to Jules and Jim to The Last Metro, Francois Truffaut (1932-1984) practically defined the French cinema of his era and was one of the founders of the New Wave which took the industry by storm in the late 1950s. His endlessly touching and romantic films—always tinged by a touch of reflective sadness—made him one of France`s favorite and most successful directors. This book traces Truffaut`s career and includes rare images drawn from his archives. Издание на английском языке.
