The latest architecture and design of restaurants and bars, from L.A. to Tokyo, is the focus of this book. Whether the challenge is merely placing furniture in a simple space, or an ambitious structural project, restaurants and bars are the sites of our most expressive architecture; more ephemeral than larger facilities or entire buildings, they are more apt to capture the mood of the times. From a skyscraper rooftop in Bangkok to a beachfront in Brazil, here are places where design, architecture, food and drink come together in inspiring combinations ranging from minimalist to extravagantly baroque. Designed and conceived like the enormously successful Architecture Now! books, this volume identifies the current trends bringing architecture and design together in new and exciting ways. Издание на английском, французском и немецком языках.
Each age must create its own architecture out of its own technology and one which is expressive of its own Zeitgeist-the spirit of the time. - Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th centurys great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll Tulip chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture. About the editor: Peter Gossel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He is the editor of TASCHENs monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series. About the author: Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect resident in the San Francisco Bay Area. The author of many books on architecture, including TASCHENs Modernism Rediscovered, his articles and projects have appeared in Architectural Design, ArCA, Global Architecture, Hunch, Construire, Architettura, ACADIA, and Journal of Architectural Education.
Now in its fifth installment, the Architecture Now! series is an ongoing project documenting the work of the most innovative and influential architects across the globe. Volume 5 features famous names and newcomers alike, and this time around a number of designers are also included, reflecting the new ways in which design and architecture are coming together. Since architecture also extends beyond walls, landscape architecture makes its appearance as well. Easy-to-navigate illustrated A-Z entries include current and recent projects, biographies, contact information, and web sites. Издание на английском, немецком, французском языках.
A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces - all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).
The work of Sert is a clear reinterpretation of Mediterranean architecture: the brise-soleil-as a kind of revitalizing of the wall, the building taken into its own self-reflection, turned to the inside as a place of repose and introspection-in short, the patio house. Buildings like Serfs own in Cambridge, the Miro Foundation in Barcelona or the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul-de-Vence-all of these provide examples of the way Sert profoundly worked these concepts in his architecture. The treatment of light is another fundamental aspect in the architecture Sert developed. The highly characteristic skylights that adorn his pieces are elements that capture the natural light and reflect it indirectly, diffusing it through the buildings interior. Text in English
It might surprise some to hear that Spain has a vibrant culture of contemporary architecture. Delayed by the Spanish Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship under Franco, the emergence of modernity in Spain may have been late in coming, but todays young architects are making up for lost time in a spectacular way. Original personalities like Cesar Manrique Cabrera marked a move toward the modern in the 1960s, while Richard Bofills innovative work in the 70s helped bring Spanish architecture to the world stage. In the 1990s, architects such as Rafael Moneo and Santiago Calatrava began to create the look of contemporary architecture in Spain as we know it today. From a modern interpretation of a bullring to cutting-edge green architecture, the book covers a dizzying variety of architectural innovation. Architects featured: Abalos & Herreros, Eduardo Arroyo, Santiago Calatrava, Alberto Campo Baeza, Santiago Cirugeda, EMTB - Miralles Tagliabue, Anton Garcia-Abril, Rafael de La-Hoz Castanys, Josep Llinas, Francisco Mangado, Mansilla + Tunon, Menis Arquitectos, Rafael Moneo, Nieto Sobejano, Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectes, RCR Aranda Pigem Vilalta Arquitectes, Selgas Cano TASCHENs new architecture series brings a unique perspective to world architecture, highlighting architectural trends by country. With this introduction to the work of Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series shines its spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture. Palladio’s “Villa Rotonda” in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today’s architects. The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared facades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th century architecture. In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. Издание на английском языке.
Great Leap Forward: Contemporary Architecture in China The past five years have seen a revolution in Chinese architecture - the emergence of independent designers, and a number of new stars - and above all new and interesting buildings that are not the product of direct Western influence. These developments have laid the groundwork for an indigenous modernity that differentiates itself from outside schools as well as eschewing the temptation to put a Chinese-style roof on ordinary office blocks. The fact that Beijing has been chosen to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games has been more than a catalyst for the development of high-quality contemporary architecture in China. Major foreign firms like OMA/Rem Koolhaas or Herzog & de Meuron are participating in the design of buildings that will have functions during the Games, but Chinese architects, too, have been mobilized in this massive effort to prepare the country for an unprecedented level of world-wide attention. Architects featured: Atelier Deshaus, FCJZ Atelier Feichang Jianzhu, AZL Atelier Zhanglei, EDGE Design Institute, Fake Design, Herzog & de Meuron, HHF Architects, Arata Isozaki, Jiakun Architects, Kengo Kuma, Li Xiaodong Atelier, MAD, MADA s.p.a.m., Michael Maltzan, Toshiko Mori, NODE – Architecture, OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Pei Zhu, URBANUS Architecture & Design, Wang Hui, Zhu Xiaofeng/Scenic Architecture TASCHENs new architecture series brings a unique perspective to world architecture, highlighting architectural trends by country. more than twenty years Daniel Libeskind has been regarded as one of the worlds leading architectural theoreticians and educators. Since 1973, he has taught at more than forty institutions, maintaining such distinguished positions as head of the Cranbrook Academy of Arts School of Architecture in Bloomfield, Michigan, founder and director of Architecture Intermundium in Milan, Italy, the Sir Bannister Fletcher Architecture Professor at the University of London in London, England, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Architecture and Urban Planning in Los Angeles, California, and the First Louis Kahn Professorship at Yale University. He is one of the last heroes of the architecture worlds avantgarde. And while ^ is the recipient of numerous awards and citations for designs, Libeskinds architectural output has largely isisted of models, drawings, poetry, and ephemera. For rs, Studio Libeskind sustained itself as a laboratory for testing of his boundary-breaking ideas. Libeskind competed for the commission to design at would become the Jewish Museum Berlin. He won. Since then, he relocated his office from Milan to Berlin, s nominated for the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, and is commissioned to design the Felix Nussbaum Haus, a museum for the city of Osnabruck, Germany, which opened to critical acclaim in 1998. In 1999, he was awarded the Deutsche Architektur Preis (German Architecture Prize) for his Jewish Museum Berlin, a structure that received over 250,000 visitors before it contained even a lgle work of art.
The quintessential California Modernist Richard Neutra and his search for modern architecture [...] the definitive volume on the Viennese-born architect. - Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture. In this volume, all of Neutras works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers. The author: Barbara Lamprecht writes on and teaches architectural history, concentrating on Modernism, and practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record and Fine Homebuilding. The editor: Peter Gossel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He has been the editor of TASCHENs monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series, and continues to work for TASCHEN as a freelance-editor.
Though there may be distinctions between a house and a home, the fact remains that the fundamental ideas of shelter, life and death are intertwined with the architecture of the commonplace in every dwelling, from cave to castle. The house can be a measure of civilization, wealth or, indeed, intelligence; it is a barometer of existence. Depending on the architect and the client, a house can be at the very cutting edge of architecture, casting aside notions of the past in search of a new paradigm; it can accept the rules of urbanism while standing them on their head. It can float in the air or emerge from the depths of the earth. Where factors of cost may limit civic architecture to tried and trusted methods, some houses break all the rules, and help architecture to move forward. This book is not about decoration, nor is it a practical guide to building one s own house. It is, rather, a search that may lead the willing reader from Patagonia in Argentina to the cliffs of Dover Heights, Australia to see some of the most remarkable houses built in the past five years.
To the Lighthouse is the most autobiographical of Virginia Woolf novels. It is based on her own early experiences, and while it touches on childhood and children perceptions and desires, it is at its most trenchant when exploring adult relationships, marriage and the changing class-structure in the period spanning the Great War.
